2009

April: Clark University cancels a scheduled talk by Holocaust scholar Norman Finkelstein (The Holocaust Industry). Finkelstein was invited by students to talk about the Gaza massacre. The ACLU in a complaint to Clark, wrote "administrators referred to Finkelstein as as 'extremist' who was 'beyond controversial', thus warranting cancellation of his speaking engagement." 2008

September: Anthropology professor J. Lorand Matory ’82, a leading scholar on the African diaspora who is known for his strong criticisms of Israel and his opposition to former University President Lawrence H. Summers, leaves Harvard to chair Duke’s African and African-American studies department. Matory said that Harvard did not respond to Duke’s offer with a comparable position or salary. March: JLC pressures landlord to retract a commitment to NECDP to hold a conference on zionism on its premises. Encuentro folds - see popup details.

March: The Union of Progressive Zionists brings its Breaking the Silence tour to Harvard. The ZOA (Zionist Organization of America) and Harvard Students for Israel group try to prevent the exhibit being shown on campus. The Hillel steering committee decides to control controversy by bringing the exhibit inside Hillel, complete with lengthy statements critical of the exhibit by other IDF veterans. February: The New Rep in Watertown is pressured to cancel its production of My Name Is Rachel Corrie. The theatre director made the compromise to show another play, during the same season, with a pro-Israeli point of view.  [link w/details to be provided]

October: Zionists pressure the Old South Church, Boston, to include pro-Israeli speakers at a Sabeel conference on 'The Apartheid Paradigm in Palestine -Israel.' See this public statement from Old South Church.

October: Krista Johnson, a long-term volunteer for Sabeel (Voice of Palestinian Christians) in Jerusalem, is denied re-entry into Israel. She is deported from Ben Gurion Airport as she attempted to return to Jerusalem after attending the Sabeel Conference in Boston. Zionists in Boston pressured Christ Church the previous year to oust Sabeel after successfully having another church in Cambridge oust the Center for Palestinian Human Rights (CPHR) (see 2006, October entry below). August: ADL fires its MA director for supporting the recognition of the Armenian genocide. See Boston Globe article re the stir this issue caused in Watertown and the greater boston area.

May: Zionists pressure Harvard University to cancel a talk by Robert Trivers due to his characterization of Alan Dershowitz.

April: Palestinian refugee childrens' art is stolen from Boston public library. Organizers suspect political motives (no kidding). "Library staff from the Honan-Allston branch said that this is the first time a theft of this kind has happened there, although they often display art exhibits." See ISM story (ISM no less! 2006

October: Zionists pressure the principal of Andover High School to renege on plans for the Wheels of Justice to make a stop at the school. Only under threat from the ACLU does the principal re-issue an invite to Wheels of Justice, for January 2007. The zionists insisted that Mazin give his talk in the evening so that parents could hear what WOJ told the students. [The Zs also demanded their own forum for a pro-Israeli talk, to be held at a later date.]  Zionists get their way, but make a complete spectacle of themselves.

September: First Alan Dershowitz tries to stop publication of Norman Finkelstein's book Beyond Chutzpah with threats of a libel suit, then he successfully pressures the Harvard Bookstore to rescind an invitation to an event for the book, stating that it feared "economic retaliation". This raises the very interesting question of just exactly who is threatening "economic retaliation?"
