Just do it -
community action (the 'message'
is outlined below)
-
Once a week, month, as
able: donate 1 dvd to your public library
(see Brain food/must see DVD)
-
Get ready for your
school's opening in Sept:
- Form a parents group that will ask to
view the history curricula
- Meet with history teachers (see what
they know/understand/teach)
- Say you'd like to hold a 'field trip' -
to the auditorium - once a month, to show
a video
- Donate a copy (or more) of eg, Howard
Zinn's book "Peoples History of the
US"
- Donate a pile of videos to the school
- Organize/promote an after-school
program for kids who want to
learn/discuss current affairs
-
Commit to only giving
gifts that educate (to family, friends
for birthdays, xmas, etc etc)
-
Donate a basket of
'educational materials'
(videos/books/DVDs) to some wing of your
local hospital. Put stickers on
every item: "borrow, enjoy,
return" "property of xy
hospital"
-
Organize video nites at
your local library (or some such public
place) and promote extensively - to the
PUBLIC (as opposed to the choir). If you
have to, offer door prizes, finger food,
copies of videos... anything to get em
in; maybe call it Patriot Nite at the
Movies :-)
-
Include in every
envelope you send some piece(s) of
literature that educates
-
Always have a visible
message wherever you are/go (buttons,
t-shirt); treat your car to bumper
stickers
-
In every interaction
you have, every day (at the supermarket,
at the corner store, gas stations, with
plumber, mailman, person passing on the
street): engage your fellow citizen ('hi
there. what do you think of what's going
on here?'). Be prepared to offer names of
books/sites where people can dig into
subject matter.
-
Every week, take a
flyer down to your local store
(convenience, hardware, whatever) for a
window display.
-
Put flyers on cars in
the local parking lot
-
Put stickers/flyers in
public restrooms
-
If you belong to a
church, organize monthly/weekly video
showings
-
Have fun with
pencils/crayons/whatever
- Decorate your bills ('impeach Bush',
'tvnewslies.org', 'justicefornone.com',
whatever...)
- Print out Freedom Press's fact-based
handbill-&-grocery-list to leave at
your supermarket: justicefornone.com/handbills/
And the old standbys:
DO NOT condescend to your
fellow citizens/friends; expect them to help, do
their part, whatever it might be (actions,
donations..). They are every bit as capable as
you or I. Be willing to hold out hope to everyone
capable of humanity/intelligent thought (there
will of course be some we can't help).
-
Media and its role in
snookering you - help your friends
dissect the 'message' - eg the myths in
'opinion polls' - that in fact have
nothing to do with public opinion, or
that have something to do with a
manufactured opinion, or opinions that
are baseless. Especially the nonsense
that public opinion matters (only when it
supports agendas of pols and their media
hound dogs).
-
Political parties,
their role in snookering you, and their
real agenda. Eg destroy the myth that the
2 parties have significant differences
and that either represents the public.
Both support big business over the
populace; both support cafta, nafta,
global trade agreements; both support
buildup of military and the military
industrial complex; both benefit from
their support of the 'shadow government'
; both want privatized health care; the
media harps on a few social differences
(gay marriage, eg), so you 'think' you
have a choice at the voting booth.
Deconstruct the message for your
neighbors. Be on THEIR side; ask them to
be on YOUR/OUR side.
-
What unites us! It's
not a party affiliation, it's OUR values
and concerns:
Liberal values are mainstream; political
parties/media are rightist proponents of
empire and corporate rule.
Eg: according to (hidden) polls: 60% of
americans support aid to inner cities;
75% support increased funds for
environmental protections, 75% support
increased funds for education, 75%
support universal health care, 78%
support an increase in the minimum wage,
80% support gun control (i'm about ready
to do an about face, join the NRA; i
think we're all going to need protection
from our government), 80% support
campaign finance reform.
