In 1971 a small group of activists set sail from Vancouver, Canada in an old fishing boat. Their mission was to stop Nixon’s atomic test bomb in Amchitka, Alaska. Chronicling this untold story at the birth of the modern environmental movement and with access to dramatic archive footage unseen for over 40 years, the film centres on eco-hero Robert Hunter and his part in the creation of the global organization we now know as Greenpeace.

Alongside a group of like-minded and idealistic young friends in the ‘70s, Hunter would be instrumental in altering the way we look at the world and our place within it. These early pioneers captured their daring and sometimes jaw-dropping actions on film and from this director Jerry Rothwell has made a thrilling, sometimes terrifying film.

Christopher Bollyn will present his Solving 9-11 research and engage in discussion and answer questions from the public. This is the last opportunity for MA folks to see Christopher Bollyn's presentation "Solving 9-11 Ends the War"

Christopher Bollyn is an investigative journalist and writer. After sojourning in Europe and the Middle East he studied languages, history, and journalism at the University of California at Davis and Santa Cruz. He earned a degree in history with the focus on the Israeli occupation of Palestine. After the first Gulf War, he led an international team of photo-journalists on a trip through the West Bank and Gaza Strip. He has written in-depth articles about the Middle East, electronic vote fraud, the dangers of depleted uranium, and the history and geo-political background of the terror attacks of 9/11. He has spoken at numerous 9/11 events across Europe and the United States.

Christopher Bollyn's current tour focuses less on what happened on 9/11 and more on the 15-year-old War on Terror. The reason for this is because it is essential to understand that the Israeli war agenda known as the War on Terror is the real reason why 9/11 was carried out.

Understanding that starting the War on Terror was the purpose and goal of the evil cabal who carried out 9/11 greatly helps to understand the source of that evil crime: Benjamin Netanyahu, Ehud Barak, Shimon Peres, Yitzhak Shamir and his son Yair, Menachem Begin and his son Benny, Menachem Atzmon and Ehud Olmert, are just a few of the well-known Israelis involved in the 9/11 conspiracy.

On March 8, 1971 eight ordinary citizens broke into an FBI office in Media, PA, took hundreds of secret files, and shared them with the public. Thus uncovering the FBI's vast and illegal regime of spying and intimidation of Americans exercising their First Amendment rights.

Despite searching for the people behind the heist in one of the largest investigations ever conducted, the FBI never solved the mystery of the break-in, and the identities of the members of the Citizens'  Commission to Investigate the FBI remained a secret.

1913: Seeds of Conflict

Many consider the Balfour Declaration and Mandate period of the 1920s as the origin of today’s Israeli occupation of Palestine. Nay, not so. Breaking new ground, 1913: SEEDS OF CONFLICT explores the divergent social forces growing in Palestine before World War I that caused the simultaneous rise in Jewish and Arab nationalism.

1913 Palestine is a multi-lingual, multi-cultural society. Muslims, Jews and Christians coexist in relative harmony and often gather together in the coffeehouses of Jerusalem. But after European Jewish migrants arrive, Ruhi al-Khalidi, Jerusalem’s representative to the Ottoman Parliament in Istanbul, voices growing concerns about what he sees as their secret agenda to build a state. So does Albert Antebi, an Arab-speaking Sephardic Jew known as the Jewish “pasha,” who embraces economic and cultural Zionism, but fears the consequences of a Zionist land grab.

The Land Speaks Arabic

This film documents the founding of the Zionist movement and the expulsion of Palestinians in the early part of the 20th century. The historical narrative is reconstructed by weaving archival materials such as photographs, films, news reels and official documents, with the testimonies of Palestinian survivors of the forced expulsion of 1947-48, referred to as the Nakba.

Malcolm X rose from the streets to become one of the most influential leaders of the civil rights movement. His adventure-filled path to public service is detailed in the documentary Malcolm X: Make It Plain.

This film chronicles Malcolm X's remarkable journey from his birth on May 19, 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska, to his assassination at the Audubon Ballroom in NYC on February 21, 1965. His compelling story is told through the memories of people who had close personal and working relationships with him: prominent figures such as Maya Angelou, Ossie Davis and Alex Haley; Nation of Islam associates, including Wallace D. Muhammad, the son of Elijah Muhammad; and family members, including his wife, Betty Shabazz, and his oldest daughter, Attallah Shabazz.

Included is extensive archival footage of Malcolm X, speaking in his own words at meetings and rallies, and in media interviews.

2015

Waste Land follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the world's largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. There he photographs an eclectic band of catadores -- or garbage pickers. The catadores are the ultimate marginalized population; unemployed in any traditional sense of the word, they resort to picking valuable recyclable materials from the garbage thrown away by more fortunate Brazilians.

Muniz--known for using unconventional materials to create portraits of marginalized people--on meeting the amazing characters who work at the landfill, decides to turn the project into a collaboration with them. He photographs pickers individually at the landfill, projects the images onto the floor of a massive warehouse nearby, and then works with the catadores to use recyclable items from the dump to recreate the images on the floor. In the end, vibrant, complex, and essentially human portraits emerge, revealing both dignity and despair as the catadores begin to re-imagine their lives.

A true David and Goliath story about a pair of Swedish filmmakers and a banana corporation. Dirty tricks, lawsuits, manipulation, and the price of free speech. (It's also a story about a country and it's media who refuse to knuckle-under to US corporate extortion. And of course that country is decidedly not the US.)

Big Boys Gone Bananas!* is the sequel to Fredrik Gertten'™s award-winning documentary, Bananas!* that recounts the lawsuit that 12 Nicaraguan plantation workers brought against the fruit giant Dole Food Company. It was a groundbreaking legal battle for Dole's use of a banned pesticide, which was known by the company to cause sterility. The plantation workers claimed they had been poisoned by pesticides such as DBCP (also known as Nemagon, which was banned in the US in 1979, and which Dow Chemical had recalled). Dole had been ordered in Nicaraguan courts to compensate the victims, but failed to do so. So the case was taken to America; Bananas!* tells that story.

Big Boys Gone Bananas, the sequel, shows how Dole sued and harassed The LA Film Festival, Gertten, and others - trying to prevent Banana!*s from ever being shown.

The People Speak is a feature film that uses dramatic and musical performances, as well as film footage, to bring to life the letters, diaries, and speeches of everyday Americans - acclaimed and anonymous - who, by insisting on equality and justice, spoke up for social change throughout

The film is narrated by historian Howard Zinn and is based on his books A People's History of the United States and, with Anthony Arnove, Voices of a People's History of the United States.

AMIA Repetita: Buenos Aires 1994: A terrorist attack at the AMIA Jewish community center: 85 dead (1 Jewish), hundreds injured. From day one--before a single piece of evidence is produced--the US and Israel blame Iran. Israel tried to sidetrack an Argentine investigation, using powerful Wall Street assets and influential pro-Israel lobbies (e.g., the Anti-Defamation League and AIPAC). 

Shades of 9/11: plants on the ground & USRael immediately blaming Iran, destroying evidence, railroading an investigation...; days prior to the attacks, work crews are going in and out of the buildings; higher-ups who would normally be at these sites are diverted to other locations; witness testimony is ignored ...

On January 27, 2013, Argentina announced it had signed a memorandum of understanding with Iran to establish a "truth commission" to investigate the AMIA bombing. AMIA Repetita is an expose of this case. [A case that to this day has Israel gunning for Argentine president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner.]

Israeli Did 9/11: Dr. Alan Sabrosky, in an interview on Press TV, lays out the case of Israeli involvement in 9/11 and US military awareness of it.

The US War on Drugs has become the longest and most costly war in American history: how much more can the country endure? Inspired by the death of four family members from "legal drugs" Texas filmmaker Kevin Booth sets out to discover why the Drug War has become such a big failure. The film follows gang members, former DEA agents, CIA officers, narcotics officers, judges, politicians, prisoners and celebrities. Most notably the film befriends Freeway Ricky Ross; the man many accuse for starting the Crack epidemic, who after being arrested discovered that his cocaine source had been working for the CIA.

AMERICAN DRUG WAR shows how money, power and greed have corrupted not just drug pushers and dope fiends, but an entire government.

Based on the true story of journalist Gary Webb, Kill the Messenger takes place in the mid 1990s, when Gary uncovered the CIA's past role in importing huge amounts of cocaine into the U.S. that was aggressively sold in ghettos across the country to raise money for the Nicaraguan Contras rebel army. Despite enormous pressure not to, Webb chose to pursue the story and went public with his evidence, publishing his series 'Dark Alliance' in the San Jose Mercury News in 1996.

As a result Gary experienced a vicious smear campaign fueled by the CIA. At that point Webb found himself defending his integrity, his family, and his life.

Heist traces the recent worldwide economic collapse to a 1971 secret memo entitled Attack on American Free Enterprise System. Written over 40 years ago by future Supreme Court Justice Lewis Powell, at the behest of the US Chamber of Commerce, the 6-page memo, called for a big business makeover of government through corporate control of the media, academia, the pulpit, arts and sciences and destruction of organized labor and consumer protection groups.

Adapted from James Heller's book, and directed by Mike Nichols, Catch-22 is a parody of a "military mentality" and of a bureaucratic society in general. Yossarian, a bombardier in World War II, tries desperately to escape the insanity of the war. Yossarian learns that even a mental breakdown is no release; Doc Daneeka explains the Army Air Corps "Catch-22": An airman "would be crazy to fly more missions and sane if he didn't, but if he was sane he'd have to fly them. If he flew them he was crazy and didn't have to; but if he didn't, he was sane and had to."

This movie explores their extraordinary struggle for justice while incarcerated in Angola, a former slave plantation where institutionalized rape and murder made it known as one of the most brutal and racist prisons in the United States.

A sweeping and revelatory documentary film that follows the trial of the infamous gangster James “Whitey” Bulger, using the courtroom action as a springboard to examine accusations of multi-faceted corruption within our nation’s law enforcement and legal systems. On April 22, 2010 the Deepwater Horizon offshore drilling rig sank into the Gulf of Mexico creating the worst oil spill in history. Until the oil well was killed on September 19th, 205 million gallons of crude oil and over 1.8 million gallons of chemical dispersant spread into the sea. By exposing the root causes of the spill, filmmakers Josh and Rebecca Tickell uncover a vast network of corruption. In 1955, Ford built America’s largest auto plant in Mahwah, New Jersey, just up the river from New York City. Between 1967 and 1971, Ford dumped hundreds of tons of toxic waste into mineshafts in northern New Jersey—right in the backyards of communities.

One member of the Ramapough, Wayne Mann, led the charge against Ford in 2005 with a lawsuit stating that they had deliberately poisoned the land and the people living on it. The class action suit finally carried through in 2008; but with an impending bankruptcy on the horizon, the Ramapough took a settlement —except for the 30 people in the area who died of cancer while the lawsuit went through the courts.

An exposé into the secret world of corporate tax dodging

On December 7, 1975 with the complicity of many Western governments including the US, the UK, and Australia, Indonesia secretly invaded the small nation of East Timor. 

In 1993, with the Indonesian army still occupying the country, John Pilger and his crew including director David Munro, slipped into East Timor and made this film. In the intervening 18 years, an estimated 200,000 East Timorese – 1/3 of the population – had been slaughtered by the Indonesian military – using US and British planes to bombard the island, while Western defense ministers proclaimed ignorance. 

As John Pilger tapes an Australian diplomat admitting that East Timor was considered “expendable”, no one watching the massacre can excuse the geopolitical machinations that led to this genocide. 

Pilger tells the story using clandestine footage of the countryside, internment camps and even Fretlin guerillas, as well as interviews with Timorese exiles, including Jose Ramos Horta and Jose Gusmao, and Australian, British, and Indonesian diplomats.

This film examines the killers' means, motive and opportunity. High on the motive list is that Senator Paul Wellstone was "sticking his nose into 9/11." Wellstone intimates say he was asking questions about 9/11...and thus was publicly executed as a warning.

They Killed Him at 10:18, the plane is disabled, 7 miles from the airport. The King Air A-100 turbo prop flies treetop level over shocked witnesses, 5 miles out: no lights, crabbed cockeyed, engines spooling down, so low witnesses are amazed it stays airborn. Three more miles and the plane stalls, dropping into the woods, killing all 8 on board. 

Why would anyone go to such trouble to so publicly kill the senior senator from Minnesota? Who benefits? VP Cheney threatened Wellstone shortly after the Senator's No vote on the Iraq War. ‘Go along with the program, if you know what’s good for you and Minnesota. Stop sticking your nose into 9/11.’

Set in the midst of the Great Depression, the film shows how longshoremen were fighting for their rights at the same time that most of their families weren’t sure where their next meal would come from. The odds were stacked against the longshoremen. 

Mainstream newspaper publishers, fearful of unionization efforts at their own papers, launched brutal attacks against the dockworkers and drove public sympathy against them. In addition, politicians and the police openly used their resources to side with the shipping companies against the striking dockworkers.  Bloody Thursday tells the human stories of the dockworkers who stood up against these odds and changed the course of American labor history.

The modern history of the Congo is a terrifying story of appalling brutality. Beginning with King Leopold II of Belgium's avaricious rape of the country and tracing the impact of this horrifying and often-forgotten crime through to the modern day, this immensely shocking doc is a heart-rending tale of a rich country destroyed by rapacious hands. Leopold's regime slaughtered an estimated 10 million Congolese (1885 - 1908).

In June, 1960, Patrice Lumumba became the first legally elected prime minister, vowing to bring true independence to the Congo. By January 17, 1961, he had been tortured and assassinated in a joint CIA-Belgium venture. The CIA's front man, despot Mobuto Sese Seko, then ruled over a brutal dictatorship for more than 38 years, with support and backing from the US, and enriched by the US with vast wealth.

Stealing A Nation (2004) is an extraordinary film about the plight of the Chagos Islands, whose indigenous population was secretly and brutally expelled by British Governments in the late 1960s and early 1970s to make way for an American military base. The tragedy, which falls within the remit of the International Criminal Court as "a crime against humanity", is told by Islanders who were dumped in the slums of Mauritius and by British officials who left behind a damning trail of Foreign Office documents.

Before the Americans came, more than 2,000 people lived on the islands in the Indian Ocean, many with roots back to the late 18th century. There were thriving villages, a school, a hospital, a church, a railway and an undisturbed way of life. The islands were, and still are, a British crown colony. In the 1960s, the government of Harold Wilson struck a secret deal with the United States to hand over the main island of Diego Garcia. The Americans demanded that the surrounding islands be "swept" and "sanitized". Unknown to Parliament and to the US Congress and in breach of the United Nations Charter, the British Government plotted with Washington to expel the entire population.

There are times when one tragedy, one crime tells us how a whole system works behind its democratic facade and helps us to understand how much of the world is run for the benefit of the powerful and how governments lie. To understand the catastrophe of Iraq, and all the other Iraqs along imperial history's trail of blood and tears, one need look no further than Diego Garcia.

The Atacama is also a place where the harsh heat of the sun keeps human remains intact: those of Pre-Columbian mummies; 19th century explorers and miners; and the remains of political prisoners, “disappeared” by the Chilean army after the military coup of September, 1973.

So while astronomers examine the most distant and oldest galaxies, at the foot of the mountains, women, surviving relatives of the disappeared whose bodies were dumped here, search, even after twenty-five years, for the remains of their loved ones, to reclaim their families’ histories.

Cocalero closely follows Evo's campaign, getting up close and personal with the candidate and the union organization backing him. What makes Evo so fascinating is how unlikely a candidate he is. While the burly candidate shrewdly watches for signs of yankee-instigated coups d'état and fields trick questions from right-wing TV personalities ("If you are elected, will we be invaded by Cubans?"), local unions conduct voting rehearsals for the unlettered. 

While the popular movement for Evo grew, there were US political advisors who were working to get the establishment candidate elected. That issue is covered in the film Our Brand Is Crisis which features James Carville as he devises media strategies to frighten people into voting against Morales. "

Project MK-ULTRA was the code name for a covert CIA mind-control and chemical interrogation research program, run by the Office of Scientific Intelligence. Begun in the early 1950s and continuing at least through the late 1960s, it used US citizens as its test subjects. The published evidence indicates that Project MK-ULTRA involved the surreptitious use of many types of drugs, as well as other methods, to manipulate individual mental states and to alter brain function. To this day most specific information regarding Project MKULTRA remains highly classified.

Through the eyes of two children who live in this camp, Issa and Farah, this documentary explores the determination to keep family and dreams thriving in a landscape that has been sculpted by war, poverty, grief and displacement.

Issa, a little boy who lives with his grandfather, sustained severe injuries when he was hit by a speeding car and has trouble learning in school. Farah lives with her parents and two sisters. The children’s memories and history are shaped by the violence that surrounds them. Both have lost family in the massacres and attacks that followed the 1948 Diaspora and the 1982 invasion of Lebanon by Israel. An aunt was decapitated, an uncle shot — every family and friend they know has lost someone to the violence. 

2008:

ZERO: An Investigation into 9/11, has one central thesis - that the official version of the events surrounding the attacks on 9/11 can not be true. This brand new feature documentary from Italian production company Telemaco explores the latest scientific evidence and reveals dramatic new witness testimony, which directly conflicts with the US Government's account.

Featuring presentations from intellectual heavy weights; Gore Vidal, and Noble Prize winner Dario Fo, the film challenges assumptions surrounding the attacks. In the words of the Italian daily newspaper, Il Corriere de da Sera, "What results is a sequence of contradictions, gaps, and omissions of stunning gravity."

Palestine Blues follows the repercussions of the Israeli Security Wall and Settlement expansion in the engulfed/annexed Palestinian farming communities of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.  Instead of focusing on the Wall as an object, Palestine Blues examines the grassroots resistance movement that has sprung up against it.

Focusing on the village of Jayyous (close to Qalqilia) and its nonviolent campaign against the wall, the film documents the heroic victories and tragic defeats of this farming community’s fight for survival.  

This Body Is a Prison is "A look at the psychological impact of the occupation in the West Bank, but there's a lot of layers to it. In the literal sense, its looking at how society is divided with tangible things like the wall, checkpoints and roadblocks, but its also looking at individual people and saying that the same things happening in society as a whole are happening inside individuals. The documentary really focuses on children. Adults fit in to the extent that they discuss children's experiences." ~ Dylan Bergeson

July 3rd, 2008 - Leila Khaled, Hijacker

Leila Khaled, Hijacker documents the life of the PFLP activist Leila Khaled, who achieved notoriety with two airplane hijackings in 1969 and 1970. The film, by Palestinian-Swedish writer Lina Makboul, addresses the distinction between terrorism and the struggle for freedom.

All That Remains is Nada El Yassir's powerful documentary that explores the struggle of Bedouins of the Naqab against Israeli policies that aim to strip them of their land and their way of life.

Palestinian Arab Bedouins once peopled the entire Naqab (Negev) Desert, a region which accounts for 60% of historic Palestine. With the creation of Israel in 1948, the majority of these Palestinians were uprooted. Those who remain are either being forcibly concentrated within one of seven designated townships; or - if they refuse to abandon their lifestyle and economy - end up living in one of 46 "unrecognized villages" lacking water, electricity, schools, roads or medical services. 

Human Rights Watch in a 2008, March 28th report on the situation says the Bedouin are victims of widespread government discrimination. The 130-page report, “Off the Map: Land and Housing Rights Violations in Israel’s Unrecognized Bedouin Villages,” documents how discriminatory Israeli laws and practices force tens of thousands of Bedouin in the south of Israel to live in “unrecognized” shanty towns where they are under constant threat of seeing their homes demolished and their communities torn apart. 

USA vs Al-Arian tells the story of Sami Al-Arian, a  university professor and pro-Palestinian civil rights activist who in February 2003,was arrested in Tampa, Florida and charged with providing material support to a terror organization. For 2 ½ years he was held in solitary confinement, denied basic privileges and given limited access to his attorneys. While the Bush administration considered this a landmark case in its campaign against international terrorism, Sami Al-Arian claims he was targeted in an attempt to silence his political views.

The film follows Sami Al-Arian’s wife Nahla and their five children throughout his 6 month-long trial. It is an intimate family portrait that documents the strain brought on by the trial, a battle waged both in court and in the media. In the film a tight-knit family unravels before our very eyes as trial preparations, strategy and spin consume their lives. This is a nightmare come to life, as a man is prosecuted for his beliefs rather than his actions. 

2,000 Terrorists centers on the search for justice of four survivors of the massacres of Sabra and Shatila who are among a group that has initiated legal action against Ariel Sharon and others responsible for the killings.

In 1982, following Israel's invasion of Lebanon and the evacuation of the PLO, Israeli defense minister Ariel Sharon declared that '2,000 terrorists' remained in Sabra and Shatila refugee camps. Monitored by the Israeli army, a Lebanese militia entered the camps to exterminate these remaining 'terrorists'. Two days later more than two thousand civilian inhabitants were killed: men, women and children, in what the United Nations officially declared to be genocide. 

 

Rachel, An American Conscience contains interviews and footage of Rachel Corrie in Palestine. She was a 23-year-old American student and human rights activist. On March 16th, 2003, an Israeli soldier, driving a US Caterpillar bulldozer 2-stoires high, crushed her to death According to numerous witnesses and photographic documentation, she was killed intentionally.

The US has yet to condemn this atrocity by an "ally" who receives more US funding than any other nation on earth, well over $10 million per day. Congress has yet to pass a resolution condemning this use of American tax money to kill an American citizen. Israel has called this atrocity "regrettable."

The US media have yet to accord this horror the attention it would normally merit. There were virtually NO follow up stories; NO STORIES about the memorial service held the next day in Gaza that was broken up by an Israeli tank, while the bulldozer that killed her drove slowly, exultantly past. NO STORES about Israeli forces blocking the ambulance carrying her remains from exiting Gaza. NO STORES about Rachel's grieving parents and siblings. NO STORES.

Each of these characters has their own way of evoking the frontiers that separate them from their neighbours: concrete, barbed-wire, cynicism, humour, indifference, suspicion, aggression… 

Frontiers have been built on the hills and in the plains, on mountains and in valleys but above all inside the minds and souls of these two peoples and in the collective unconscious of both societies. 

With Route 181: Fragments of a Journey in Palestine-Israel, Michel Khleifi and Eyal Sivan take us on a disorientating journey across this tiny territory with vast ramifications.

2007:

Goal Dreams is a wonderful new documentary feature focusing on national and personal identity as experienced by a sports team like none before.

How can a team without a recognized homeland, no permanent domestic league, no place to train and with players and coaches scattered around the globe compete in the world of modern football? Founded in 1928, the Palestinian Football Association (PFA) is considered one of the oldest football associations in the Arab World.

Since being recognized by FIFA in 1998, the team has risen 70 places in the international rankings, despite never having been able to play on home soil.

Following the team as they prepare for the 2006 World Cup, Goal Dreams chronicles the suspension of domestic league games after an Israel air strike on Palestine Stadium, while Austrian coach Alfred Riedle makes a heroic effort to mold players from diverse countries such as the USA, Chile, Palestine and Lebanon into a national team unlike any other.

Sucha Normal Thing - A Simple Journey into the Israeli-Occupied West Bank

"We are human beings and we feel," reflects a Palestinian hotel manager. Capturing the voice of individual Palestinians, internationals, and Israeli peace activists, Sucha Normal Thing documents untold stories of ordinary people amidst the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Filmed in the fall of 2003 by American filmmaker Rebecca Glotfelty, Sucha Normal Thing vividly explores visceral moments of life and death under occupation. From the busy cities of Jerusalem, Ramallah, Hebron, and Nablus, to the villages of Sa'aer and Zbuba, Sucha Normal Thing brings forth stories of Palestinians struggling to maintain a normal existence under Israeli occupation as well as Israelis, Palestinians, and internationals working non-violently toward peace.

Sucha Normal Thing captures the uncertainty of a "normal" day for the filmmaker and the Palestinian farmers, children, doctors, teachers and others living and working in the West Bank. Amidst stories of fear, anger, and hopelessness, exist moving stories of humans determined to persevere, to rise above the situation, to remain hopeful despite the uncertainty of daily life. A Palestinian father declares, "I want my children to be free, think free, not to be caged in the occupational culture." Hopeful for a life of freedom from the occupation.

American documentary filmmaker James Longley traveled to the Gaza Strip in January of 2001, planning to stay for two weeks and collect preliminary material for a film about the Palestinian intifada. He threw away his return ticket and stayed for another 3 months, shooting over 75 hours of material throughout the Gaza Strip.

Gaza Strip follows a range of people and events following the election of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, including the first major armed incursion into "Area A" by IDF forces during this intifada. The film is filmed almost entirely in a verite style, presented without narration and with little explanation, focusing on ordinary Palestinians rather than politicians and pundits. More observation than political argument, Gaza Strip offers a rare look inside the stark realities of Palestinian life and death under Israeli military occupation.

They talk about their past and discuss the future with humor, sorrow, frustration and hope. "until when..." paints an intimate in-depth portrait of Palestinian lives today.

May 3 - Checkpoint - The Palestinians After Oslo (58 min) Download flyer

The signing of the Oslo Peace Accord in 1993 sparked worldwide hope for a resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Checkpoint takes a critical look at this peace agreement and its aftermath. 

Tom Wright and Therese Saliba lived in the West Bank from 1995 to 1996 and chronicled these events as they unfolded. Checkpoint portrays a side of the story little known to American audiences: the devastating effects of the agreement on Palestinian lives. With an engaging style and offbeat humor, the documentary exposes shallow mass-media interpretations of the conflict and reveals the immense imbalance of power between the two sides. 

Palestinian and Israeli human rights activists, as well as political figures like Hanan Ashrawi, give their views of the major events of the period: Rabin's assassination, the Palestinian Authority takeover of West Bank towns, the first Palestinian elections, the suicide bus bombings, Arafat's abuse of power, Netanyahu's election, and the September 1996 uprising.


Checkpoint takes its title from the innumerable Israeli roadblocks, which ironically have become a permanent feature in the new era of Palestinian "autonomy." In the post-Oslo era, the checkpoint becomes the symbol of Israeli control and domination. In the face of these obstacles, Israelis and Palestinians seek to grapple with these grave injustices and to set forth an alternative vision for a just peace.

During the Six-Day War, Israel attacked and nearly sank the USS Liberty belonging to its closest ally, the USA. Thirty-four American servicemen were killed in the two-hour assault by Israeli warplanes and torpedo boats. Israel claimed that the whole affair had been a tragic accident based on mistaken identification of the ship. The American government accepted the explanation.

For more than 30 years many people have disbelieved the official explanation but have been unable to rebut it convincingly. Now, Dead in the Water uses startling new evidence to reveal the truth behind the seemingly inexplicable attack.
